Who runs Pagoda

Pagoda is run by its owner, who decides how the data below is used (the data controller). This service has no contact channel, so everything you may want to do with your data you can do yourself in the app, as described under “Your rights”.

What we process

The display name and avatar you choose, the seat or place in the queue you take, your position while you walk the grounds, and your gestures (bow, greet, bead, bell). Your network address is used only in memory to count open connections. Your browser’s time zone may be sent to pick a coarse weather area; it is not logged or stored. We never ask for your real name, email, phone number or precise location, and there are no accounts.

Why, and on what basis

To run the temple: show you to other visitors under the name you chose, keep your seat and place in the queue, and keep the service secure and available. The basis is our legitimate interest in running a safe service and, for the name itself, your own choice to enter it. What your browser remembers is strictly necessary to keep your choices, so no cookie banner is needed. Visit statistics (Umami, Cloudflare Web Analytics) use no cookies and no personal data. Pagoda sets no cookies.

How long it is kept

On the server, your name, seat, queue place and position live in memory only, with no database. They are removed when you leave, and at most 25 seconds after your connection drops. A cushion held for you is kept for 30 seconds. Anonymous running totals (such as how many bows were made) hold no personal data. In your browser, your name, avatar, settings and a random resume code stay in local storage until you clear them; your seat and pass in session storage end when the tab closes. The application’s request log keeps only the method, route, status and timing, never your address, name or token. Cloudflare and the web servers in front of it may keep their own standard technical logs for security and troubleshooting.

Who else handles data

Cloudflare delivers the site and sits between you and our server, so it handles your network address and request details to deliver pages and block abuse, under its own privacy policy. Our host operates the servers as our processor. Umami counts page views without cookies or personal data. Open-Meteo supplies weather to our server for a coarse area, never your address or name. Cloudflare, Inc. also provides privacy-first, cookieless Web Analytics (aggregate page views and performance) as part of its role as our CDN and processor; by its own description it uses no cookies or local storage and no fingerprinting. Umami is self-hosted on our own infrastructure and cookieless; it stores no personal data or IP address, and counts page views and a few anonymous in-app events (entering the grounds, choosing a hall, sitting down, sharing).

International transfers

Cloudflare runs a global network, so your request may be handled in a data centre outside your country, including outside the EU/EEA or the UK, under the safeguards Cloudflare applies to such transfers. Apart from that, nothing about you leaves our server; weather requests contain no personal data.

Children

Pagoda is open to everyone but is not directed at children under 13 (16 in some countries). We collect no personal data on purpose; a child should visit only with a parent’s or guardian’s agreement and should not enter a real name.

Your rights, without contacting us

Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR, UK GDPR or CCPA/CPRA) you may have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict or object to the use of your data, and to complain to your data protection authority. Pagoda keeps almost nothing and has no accounts, so you can do this yourself: change your name and avatar in the app; leave the temple and the server forgets you within 25 seconds; clear this site’s data in your browser to erase what it stored; reset your choices in Settings. We do not sell or share personal data and do not profile you or take automated decisions about you.

Security

Data travels over an encrypted HTTPS connection, is held in memory only, and open connections are limited per network address to reduce abuse. No system is perfectly secure, but there is very little to protect: no accounts, no passwords, no message history.

Changes and effective date

This policy takes effect on 2026-11-04. If it changes, we will update this page and its date.

Terms of use

Using the temple

By entering Pagoda you agree to these terms. There are no accounts: you only choose a name for your visit. If you do not agree, please do not use the service.

Acceptable use

Keep the temple quiet and kind. No harassment or abuse. Do not use a name that is offensive, hateful, sexual, misleading, an advertisement or someone else’s identity. We may remove a name or end a visit without notice.

No automated abuse

No bots, scripts or automated clients, no flooding of gestures or connections, no attempts to bypass limits or probe the servers, and no scraping or other activity that harms the service.

As is, and availability

Pagoda is provided “as is” and “as available”, free of charge and without warranties of any kind. It may change, pause, close or be unavailable at any time. It is not a real temple, a religious authority or a health service, and it gives no religious, medical or psychological advice.

Content and licences

The temple, its art, sounds and text belong to the owner or are used under licence; you may use them for personal, non-commercial visits. Open-source components keep their own licences, listed in the Licences section below.

Offerings

Offering rice is optional, takes place on a separate page and changes nothing about what you can do in the temple. It is a voluntary gift, not a purchase.

Limitation of liability

To the extent the law allows, the owner is not liable for indirect, incidental or consequential loss, or for any loss from using or being unable to use Pagoda. Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law, or your mandatory consumer rights.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the law that applies where the owner of the service is established, without removing the mandatory protections of the country where you live.

Changes and effective date

These terms take effect on 2026-11-04. We may update them; the date shows the latest version, and using the service after a change means you accept it.

Open-source licences

Pagoda is built with these third-party packages and fonts. Each is used under its own licence, shown below.

Accessibility

Pagoda aims to be usable by everyone: it works with a keyboard, with screen readers, and at larger text sizes, and it has a high-contrast and a reduced-motion setting.

You can change text size, contrast, motion and sound in Settings (the gear in the header). The temple is also available as a lighter 2D view.

We keep improving accessibility as the temple grows. If something is hard to use today, the options in Settings are the way to adapt it.
